First of all I just want to say, this is a GREAT idea!! There have been some changes on the streets of Newcastle recently. The busking time has been cut from 2hrs to 1 hour before we have to move on. It is not really the actual regs as they never really reinforce them. It is the very idea that these changes are made and we do not have a say in the process at all. It's the usual thing of not being seen as a positive thing, we are seen as at best a bit of an irritant. I am interested in approaching the council with the intention of wanting to just start a dialogue. Open channels of communication. Any ideas?

Good to hear from you Ojay,

We are seeking to build up good channels of communication between councils and performers. From my understanding, Newcastle operate a voluntary code of conduct. To that end, if someone ever tries to get you to move on unfairly, politely point out that the code is voluntary and that you are under no legal obligation to move. If you could find the name and e-mail address of someone who organises busking in Newcastle, we can certainly get in touch with them on your behalf...

In the meantime, please feel free to stay in touch with us, and to let us know if there is any deterioration in the relationship between buskers and the local authority!

Newcastle used to issue a set of rules for buskers on an A4 sheet you could get on application. This set out where you could play and used to say that you can play there unless someone complains in which case you have to stop. Also that you are not allowed to ask for money, only take donations where offered. I don't know if it is still available. If you want to sell CD's you need a hawkers licence
