Post licensing & legality in london?

hi everyone,

i busk in london regularly. i don't have a license. so far, i've found the following:

- lambeth, southwark, camden, greenwich: don't mind people busking, police/council people have walked past and smiled (though never given me money, obviously... ;) )

- westminster, the city: it's apparently illegal. is this correct? is it possible for busking to be illegal?

- covent garden, inside tube stations: you need a license. fair enough.

- the best deal i've found so far is from a guy who runs some farmers' markets. he's officially hired me as "entertainment" and therefore i don't get busted regardless of where i am because i'm part of his market. this is very useful.

not sure what everyone else's experiences are. i'm intrigued by the statement that busking isn't technically a licensable activity. does that apply to london?

yeah, i thought as much. i'm basically trying to be as nice to the council people as possible so far, and they seem to be returning the favour. however, i am cynical enough to believe that this is probably at least partly due to me being a small, smiley girl singing folk songs acapella.
